The Cove

A solid beechwood sculpture that your cat lives inside.

Most side tables are just surfaces. The Cove is a solid beechwood cube with a perfect circle cut through it — and your cat lives on the other side of that circle.

From across the room, it reads as sculpture. Up close, it's a handcrafted sanctuary built with traditional mortise and tenon joinery — no screws, no glue, no hardware. The circle is cut by hand into solid beechwood, which is one of the more difficult things to do cleanly in wood. That difficulty is what makes it look the way it does.

Your lamp sits on top. Your cat disappears inside. Your room looks exactly the way you designed it to.

The Cove is built with hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery — the same 600-year-old technique used across the ZenPaw collection. But the Cove adds one more challenge: a 9-inch perfect circle, routed by hand through solid beechwood.

A clean circle in hardwood requires the wood to be worked against its grain in multiple directions without splintering. It's the kind of detail that separates a piece that's been made from a piece that's been built. The result is an entrance your cat passes through every day and guests ask about every time.

The circle that changes the whole piece

A 9-inch circle, cut by hand through solid beechwood. No frame, no metal ring, no insert — just wood, shaped until the opening is clean and smooth enough for a cat to pass through daily without catching fur or skin. The circle is what makes the Cove look like it belongs in a design magazine. It also happens to be exactly the right size for a cat.

Total enclosure — for cats who want to disappear

Unlike slatted designs that let light and sound in from all sides, the Cove's solid walls create genuine darkness and quiet inside. Some cats want to observe the room. Others want to vanish from it entirely. The Cove is built for the second kind — the cat who tucks in and doesn't come out until they're ready. The solid beechwood walls hold warmth, block drafts, and dampen sound in a way that open designs cannot.

Furniture that works without the cat

The Cove is designed to look right even when your cat isn't using it. The solid cube form and hand-cut circle are a complete design statement on their own — guests who don't have pets consistently mistake it for a decorative object or art piece. Which means whether your cat is inside or out, the room looks exactly as you intended.

No glue. No screws. Just wood holding wood.

Every corner of the Cove is joined with hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery — the same structural technique used in traditional timber-frame architecture. The joints tighten under load rather than loosening over time. No glue means no off-gassing in the enclosed space where your cat sleeps. No screws means nothing to loosen, rust, or catch a paw.

A proper nightstand — not a compromise

The 24" × 22" top surface holds a lamp, phone, book, and glass of water — the full nightstand load — without flexing. The solid beechwood construction means no wobble when you reach over in the dark. It sits at standard bedside height. Your cat gets a den. You get a nightstand. Nobody gives anything up.

FAQ

Q: Is the circular entrance big enough? My cat is on the larger side.

A: The 9-inch (23 cm) circular entrance accommodates cats up to 18 lbs (8 kg) comfortably — which covers the vast majority of domestic breeds. If your cat is on the larger side (Maine Coon, Ragdoll, or a particularly well-fed tabby), message us with their weight and we'll tell you honestly whether the Cove is the right fit, or whether a custom entrance size is possible.

Q: Is ventilation adequate in a fully enclosed space?

A: Yes. The 9-inch circular entrance provides sufficient airflow for a cat at rest. Solid beechwood is also a naturally breathable material — unlike MDF or plastic, it doesn't trap humidity. The internal dimensions (20" × 18" × 18") provide enough air volume that the space doesn't become stuffy.

Q: Should I choose the Cove or the Horizon?

A: It comes down to your cat and your room. Choose the Horizon if your cat likes to watch the room while resting — the slatted sides give them full visibility. Choose the Cove if your cat prefers complete enclosure and darkness — cats who tuck into closets or under beds will almost always prefer the Cove. For the room: the Horizon reads as open and airy; the Cove reads as sculptural and defined. Both are the same price, same materials, same joinery.

Q: Will my cat actually go inside?

A: Cats are instinctively drawn to enclosed spaces with a single entry point — it matches how they seek shelter in the wild. The Cove's solid walls and circular entrance are specifically calibrated to those instincts. Most cats explore the Cove within hours of it being placed. If yours is hesitant, place a worn item of your clothing inside for the first night.

Q: Why does it take 2 weeks?

A: Because the circle is cut after your order. Routing a clean 9-inch circle through solid beechwood requires the wood to be worked carefully against its grain — if the plank has inconsistencies, the cut won't be clean. We select the wood after your purchase, checking for the grain density that produces the smoothest circle. The two weeks are where that precision lives.
