The Memory Sanctuary

A place that holds their portrait. A piece of furniture that holds your room. Handcrafted solid beechwood — built to stay in the family.

They were part of the house. They should stay part of it.

The Memory Sanctuary is a handcrafted solid beechwood cat house and side table with a portrait slot built into the front panel — a space made specifically to hold a photograph of the one who used to sleep inside. It sits in the living room, beside the sofa, in the exact spot where they used to be. The top holds your lamp. The inside holds the memory of them.

This is not a box you put away. It's a piece of furniture you keep.

If someone you know has just lost a pet, the Memory Sanctuary is a gift that doesn't fade. A bunch of flowers lasts a week. A card gets filed away. A piece of handcrafted furniture stays in the room — a permanent, physical acknowledgment that what they had mattered, and that the space their pet occupied is worth marking.

We can arrange for the piece to be shipped directly to them, with a note from you enclosed. Message us after ordering.

The Memory Sanctuary is built with hand-cut box joints — the interlocking corner technique that exposes the wood's end grain at each edge, creating the characteristic striped pattern visible on the outside corners. No glue. No nails. No screws. Just wood, fitted precisely enough that it holds itself together for generations.

We build each piece after your order — selecting the beechwood plank, reading its grain, cutting the joints by hand. The two weeks aren't a delay. They're the piece being made specifically for the life it's going to hold.

The portrait slot — built for one specific photograph

The front panel of the Memory Sanctuary has a recessed portrait slot — a framed opening sized for a standard 4×6 photograph. It's not an afterthought. It was designed into the piece from the beginning, because we believe the furniture that holds their memory should be built for exactly that purpose. Slide in their photograph. It stays. The piece stays. They stay — in the room, in the family, in the house.

A proper side table — not a shrine that interrupts the room

The Memory Sanctuary functions as a full side table: the 24" × 22" solid beechwood top holds a lamp, books, a glass — the complete surface you'd expect from furniture at this quality. The portrait slot is integrated into the front panel without disrupting the clean lines. From across the room, it reads as furniture. Up close, it tells the story. That balance is intentional — grief doesn't have to announce itself.

Box joints: the craftsmanship that shows at the corners

The Memory Sanctuary's corners are built with hand-cut box joints — the interlocking teeth of end grain that appear as a striped pattern on each outer edge. They're meant to be seen. In a piece that's built to hold memory, we wanted the joinery to be as visible as the photograph — a reminder that this was made by hand, with care, for something that mattered.

Built to outlast the grief — and stay in the family

Solid beechwood with natural wax oil finish doesn't degrade. The box joints don't loosen. The portrait slot doesn't warp. The Memory Sanctuary is built to the same standard as the rest of the ZenPaw collection — furniture quality, not memorial-product quality. It will be in your home long after the grief has settled into something quieter. That's the point of making it this well.

The inside — for what you choose to keep there

The enclosed interior of the Memory Sanctuary can hold whatever feels right: a favorite toy, a collar, a small blanket. Or nothing. The space is there if you want it. It doesn't have to be used to be meaningful — the piece is complete either way.

FAQ

What size photo can fit in the portrait slot?
The portrait slot is sized for a standard 4×6 inch (10×15 cm) photograph — the most common print size. If you have a specific photo in mind that's a different size, message us before ordering and we can confirm whether it will fit, or discuss whether a custom slot size is possible for your piece.

Can I send this directly to a friend as a gift?
Yes. We can ship the Memory Sanctuary directly to the person you're buying it for, with a handwritten note from you enclosed. Message us after placing your order with the recipient's address and what you'd like the note to say. There's no extra charge for this. We handle it carefully — the packaging is clean and considered, not obviously commercial.

My pet is still alive, can I buy it now?
Yes — and many people do. Some find it meaningful to have the piece in the home while their pet is still alive, so the space is already familiar to both of them. Others order it in advance so they're not making decisions in the hardest days. There's no right time. If it feels right to you, it is.

What can I put in the interior space?
Whatever feels right to you. A favorite toy, a collar, a small blanket, a handwritten note. Some people leave the interior empty — the portrait slot and the presence of the piece in the room is enough. There's no prescribed way to use it. We built the interior space because we wanted the option to be there, not because it needs to be filled.

Why is there a 2‑week wait?
Because we build each piece after your order — selecting the beechwood, reading the grain, cutting the box joints by hand. For the Memory Sanctuary, we're especially careful with the wood selection: the portrait slot needs a panel with clean, consistent grain so the frame around the photograph looks considered rather than incidental. The two weeks are the piece being made for the specific life it's going to hold in memory.

How long will the wood last?
Solid beechwood with natural wax oil finish is one of the most durable material combinations in furniture-making. It doesn't degrade, doesn't warp in normal indoor conditions, and deepens in character over decades of use. The box joints tighten over time, not loosen. A well-kept piece will outlast you. We built it that way because a piece that holds memory should be built to last longer than the grief does.
