The Horizon
600-year-old joinery. Zero glue. One piece of furniture that belongs to both of you.
There's a corner of your living room that belongs to both of you. Your lamp sits on top. Your cat disappears inside. The rest of the room stays exactly as you designed it.
The Horizon is a handcrafted solid beechwood side table and cat sanctuary built with traditional mortise and tenon joinery — the same technique used to construct the Forbidden City, unchanged for 600 years. No glue. No nails. No screws. Just wood, cut precisely enough that it holds itself together.
It arrives fully assembled. Because real joinery doesn't come flat-packed.
The joinery that built the Forbidden City. Now in your living room.
Before screws existed, Chinese craftsmen built temples and palaces that have stood for centuries — using nothing but precisely cut wood joints. That same technique, mortise and tenon, holds every ZenPaw piece together.
Each joint is cut by hand. Each plank of beechwood is selected after your order, shaped, and fitted until the wood locks into itself. No glue means no off-gassing. No nails means nothing to rust, loosen, or catch a curious paw.
What's in it — and what isn't
Solid FSC-certified beechwood — not MDF, not particle board, not "wood-inspired." Real hardwood with visible grain that deepens in character over years, not months.
Natural wood wax oil finish — zero VOCs, zero synthetic sealants. Safe if they lick it. Safe if they sleep on it for 12 hours a day. Which they will.
Removable felt pad (Charcoal) — machine-washable. Because cat hair is not a question of if.
2-inch slat spacing — wide enough for a paw to stretch through, narrow enough that no head gets stuck. Designed to U.S. pet safety standards.
No glue. No nails. No screws. No metal hardware of any kind. The only things holding this piece together are wood and geometry.
Side table above. Sanctuary below.
The 24" × 24" top holds your lamp, your book, your morning coffee. The recessed edge keeps things from sliding off when a tail swishes by.
Below, a 20" × 21" interior gives your cat a dark, quiet space to retreat — open front for easy entry, side slats for ventilation and a partial view of the room. Cats don't want to be sealed in. They want to be able to watch.
It fits beside your sofa. It fits beside your bed. It fits into a home that refuses to choose between beautiful furniture and a happy cat.

FAQ
Q: Will my cat actually use it?
A: Most cats take to the Horizon within a few days. Cats are drawn to enclosed spaces with a single entry point and slatted walls that let them observe the room — which is exactly what the Horizon provides. If your cat is hesitant at first, place a worn item of your clothing inside for the first night. The familiar scent makes the space feel safe faster than any other technique.
Q: Is the tabletop stable? Will it wobble?
A: The Horizon is built with mortise and tenon joinery — the same structural technique used in traditional timber-frame architecture. The joints tighten under load rather than loosening over time. The top surface supports up to 30 lbs (14 kg) without flex. It does not wobble. A lamp, books, and a full glass of water are well within its range.
Q: What size cat will fit inside?
A: The interior is 20"W × 21"D × 18"H — sized for cats up to 20 lbs (9 kg), which covers the majority of domestic breeds including Maine Coons and Norwegian Forest Cats. If your cat is on the larger side, message us before ordering and we'll confirm. Cats prefer spaces roughly 1.5× their body size — the Horizon's dimensions are calibrated to that preference.
Q: Is the wood safe if my cat licks or chews it?
A: The Horizon is finished with natural wood wax oil — no lacquer, no synthetic sealants, no VOC off-gassing. If your cat licks or chews the wood, there are no harmful compounds. The beechwood itself is non-toxic. We built this without any glue — so there are no adhesive compounds anywhere in the structure.
Q: How do I clean the felt pad?
A: The charcoal felt pad removes in seconds and is fully machine-washable — cold water, gentle cycle. Most cat parents wash it every 2–4 weeks. Replacement pads are available separately. The beechwood frame, wiped with a slightly damp cloth, will outlast many pad cycles.
Q: Why does it take 2 weeks?
A: We don't build until you order. After your purchase, we select the beechwood planks — reading the grain, matching the tone across all panels so the slats align visually. The Horizon has more visible surface area than any enclosed ZenPaw piece, which means the wood selection is more exacting. The two weeks are where the craftsmanship lives, not where it's delayed.
